Speaker Systems – Help With Choosing the Right One For You

If you’re investing in a speaker system, be it an MP3 speaker system or in wall speakers, the amount of options available can be a little overwhelming to the novice audiophile. There really are too many options to go though in a single article, and you should ask for advice in the shop where you purchase the speakers from. However, there are a few main variables to look at. If you know what these mean then talking to the speaker sales man will be a lot easier.

The first thing to look at is the power rating of the individual speakers. The amplifier you use will output a certain power. If this power is higher than the maximum value the speaker can take, over time you’ll permanently damage the speaker. Simply check the maximum power output of your amplifier matches the power rating of the speaker before you buy it. If the amplifier and speakers are sold as part of a set, this should already be matched up.
Secondly, the sensitivity is actually a measure of what kind of air pressure the speaker can produce with a certain input power. You don’t need to know how this is calculated; however, when comparing speakers, just remember that, the higher the value, the better.
Also very important to check is what’s called the frequency response. Sound, as you probably know, is called by vibrations in the air. The higher frequency of air vibration, the higher the pitch of the sound will be. When we’re very young, the general range of sound most people can hear is between 20 Hz and 20 KHz. This range does reduce with age; however, it’s generally accepted that the closer the speaker gets to that dynamic range, the better. So, for example a frequency response of 35 Hz to 20 KHz is much better than 50 Hz to 18 KHz. The closer the speaker gets to the 20 Hz to 20 KHz range, the more balanced the sound will be.

These are the main variables that you should look into when you’re buying speakers, but that said, there are still multiple other extras depending on what kind of speaker you’ve opted for. For example, do they have their own bass and treble controls? Are they wall mountable? Are they moisture resistant?
